Welcome to Nutfield Marsh Angling Club

Nutfield Marsh is a private fishery and limited-membership syndicate, set within a landscape shaped by both nature and local history.

We are deliberately small. Membership is limited so that the fishery can be managed properly, fishing pressure remains controlled and the character of the Marsh is protected. For us, Nutfield Marsh is not simply somewhere to fish; it is somewhere we have a responsibility to look after.

We consider ourselves custodians and protectors of the land.

The Marsh sits within an area with a long industrial history, most notably associated with the extraction of fuller’s earth. Nutfield and the surrounding Redhill area were once among the country’s most important sources of this naturally occurring clay, with commercial extraction developing on a significant scale during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The local workings later became associated with Laporte Industries, following its acquisition of the Fuller’s Earth Union in the 1950s. For decades, the surrounding landscape was shaped by mineral extraction, processing, lagoons and quarry workings.

Today, that landscape is very different.

Nature has steadily reclaimed much of the former industrial ground, creating lakes, woodland, grassland and valuable habitat. The waters we fish are therefore part of a much longer story: from an intensively worked landscape to the quiet, mature environment that exists today.

That history is something we believe should be respected.

As a syndicate, our responsibility extends far beyond the fish themselves. We look after the lakes, banks, trees, wildlife and surrounding environment, managing the fishery sympathetically and making decisions with its long-term future in mind.

Limited membership is an important part of that approach. It allows us to control pressure on the fish and the environment, maintain the character of the fishery and ensure that those who join understand that membership brings responsibilities as well as fishing opportunities.

Nutfield Marsh is also very much about the people. Over the years it has become a place of friendships, shared experiences, stories and memories. The fishing matters, of course, but so does the community that has grown around it.

We see ourselves as temporary guardians of something that existed long before us and, hopefully, will continue long after us.
